Plan a sequence of four lessons through which students will respond to the inquiry you have establised. Each lesson will be 50 minutes in length. Each lesson will build on the one before and provide multiple ways for students to publish their findings.
Oh wow I think I have actually been able to upload this document! Karen Mac 11.30 pm 23/9 I prefer the idea of the students having already been to Soveriegn Hill prior to these lessons. Just a thought. Andrea Lesson 1
Introduce goldrush theme with question and answer time.
Ask students what they would like to know about the gold rush.
Make a KWL chart...K=what they know, W=what they want to learn and L is for reflecting on what they have learnt. Students could keep a blog with their KWLs perhaps, or use Word to keep KWLs and update each lesson. I think the learning federation goldrush activity would work well as part of the introduction to the topic. This is like the brainstorming activity I suggested in my lesson plan! Yeah we are all on the same page!!( KMac)
Lesson 2
Update KWL chart - this will stimulate discussion and provide time for reflection before moving on to next activities. Lesson 3
Update KWL chart - this will stimulate discussion and provide time for reflection before moving on to next activities. Lesson 4
Update KWL chart - this will stimulate discussion and provide time for reflection before moving on to next activities.

A question for lesson 4 - Roblyer and Doering suggest that ICT for the purposes of integration be used for a tool for learning. I dont dispute the activity suggested, but what do the children learn with this ict activity. This makes the ict the learning focus which was suggested inthe assig that this was not to be the case- just throwing thoughts around. I see the activity being a small part of one lesson..with students rotating in groups through several activities. As most classrooms only have a few computers, most classes would work in groups to enable the best use of resources.
Are children going to be aparticipating in an excursion to Soveriggn Hill prior to the work in this unit. This provide children with some interest as hopefully they will have had a great day and have lots to talk about. Following lessons can help consolidate what they have learnt and also go into what they have seen and learnt a little deeper. Sounds good.
Looking at the who and what of the people of the gold rush - I though that student could write a profile about a character that they found at soverign hill. This idea could be part of the final product of the lesson with students preparing a "wiki" with different hyperlinks to various characters/occupations of the gold rush days. May be kids could actually draw out of a hat (so to speak) the name/occupation of the person that they are to explore in detail at soverign hill so we can develop a picture of who and what of a whole world in the gold rush -ie teachers merchants, shop owners, gold traders, miners, land sellers, the people who sold the licenses etc.Children then become to understand that the gold rush - whilst primarily is about digging for gold - people still had a life (kind of), they still had families back home that they wrote letters to (Maybe). So it may fill out more of the who and what of the gold rush. It links to civics inthe vels as it looks at people and purpose in society. Again my head says wiki - is this a learning tools in this situation.
Could children also do a sand art activity- glue and sand - prob messy but so is panning for gold. I am thinking here of the touch feely type understanding of the physical hard type life in dirt and grime. How this could then be used with ict I dont know. But maybe there is some ict sand sculptures on slides or pictures of the landscapes relating to the mining areas that could be shown on the interactive whiteboard that could allow children to discuss and move to an art piece. Maybe children could use a collection of natural stuff, sand, dirt, leaves, tan bark etc for this piece of art. This idea would need to further connected or refined to an understanding. .
There is also a leeson that has to be done using justines resource.
Could children write a lettter home in character of the person they may have researched at soveriegn hill?
Is there some other type of activity from scootle that allow for geopgrapy wehre children can look at some of the countries of the world or make some type of world map on the computer and then use the map they made to isolate or show the areas inthe world that people came from for the gold rush. - This initial info of whre people came from may have to be delived in a reading at the beginning of a lesson or is there also and ICT video that can be shown on the interactive whiteboard.
